Meyers Receives NYS 4-H Foundation Scholarship

Lindsay Meyers is one of nine statewide recipients of the New York State 4-H Foundation college scholarship. Lindsay was chosen from a field of over sixty applicants for this recognition, presented to New York State's most outstanding 4-H members. The New York Sate 4-H Foundation believes in the need to provide dedicated, hardworking youth an opportunity to pursue their dreams of obtaining an advanced degree and distinguishing themselves in productive careers that will provide benefits to society. Once again proving that 4-H really can take you places!

Lindsay is the daughter of Jay and Cindy Meyers from Old Chatham. She is currently enrolled at the College of Saint Rose in the elementary education program.

Lindsay has been a 4-H member in Columbia County for thirteen years. She is a 4-H Teen Ambassador and 4-H Teen Evaluator. She has been active in the Kool Kats 4-H Club, the 4-H Family and Consumer Sciences Advisory Committee and the 4-H Youth Development Program Committee. Lindsay has participated in 4-H Capital Days, Citizenship Washington Focus, Cornell Career Explorations and the State Teen Action Rep Retreat.

Teen Awarded 4-H College Scholarship

Tyler MacIntosh is the recipient of the $150 college scholarship presented by the 4-H Youth Development Program Committee of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Columbia County. He was chosen on the merit of his application which described the breadth of his involvement in 4-H projects and activities, what he has gained most form his experiences in 4-H and how those experiences will help him in the future.

Tyler is the son of Bruce and Ann MacIntosh and lives in Kinderhook. He will be attending Hudson Valley Community College this fall where he will be majoring in Liberal Arts. After graduation he plans to continue his education at RIT with a major in software engineering.

Tyler has been a 4-H member for six years, as a member of the Cougars 4-H Club and the 4-H Teen Ambassadors. Tyler has found projects related to the computer as his most meaningful. He has been a key member of the NYS YouthCAN team that has created a website that is a place for teens to connect and share ways they are changing our world for the better. He helped to design the code for the original website three years ago and has now designed a completely new website.

Because of Tyler’s unique interests and abilities, he joined the New York team to attend the 4-H National Technology Conference last summer. While there he was trained in the proper use of the Operation Military Kids (OMK) lab. With this knowledge, Tyler has been involved in a New York project, creating training materials and training teens and volunteers in the use of the OMK lab and equipment. Through this lab, set up at county fairs and community malls, children of our soldiers are able to create and send messages via the internet to their parents.

Tyler has been an active participant in available 4-H learning opportunities outside of Columbia County. He has attended 4-H Capitol Days, the State Teen Action Rep Retreat and the New York State Fair.

Tyler believes that the single most helpful aspect of his involvement in 4-H has been the connections he has made. And, in this technology-filled world, connections are an important part of any young person’s future. Tyler has friends all over the United States. He has also enhanced his communication and leadership skills. As he states, “Business is nowadays an international affair, and with the skills from 4-H I will be able to communicate effectively and lead successfully in the world of tomorrow”.

4-H is the youth development program of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Columbia County. Opportunities are available for youth (in grades K-12) and adults to become involved in Cloverbud Clubs,  Community 4-H Clubs, and Family 4-H Clubs. For more information contact Cornell Cooperative Extension at 828-3346 or Columbia@cornell.edu or write to us at 479 Rt. 66, Hudson, NY 12534.

4-H Fashion Revue – A-May-Zing Creations
By Linda K. Earley, Extension Educator, 4-H Youth Development

Although the Revue took place in mid-May, 4-H members have been working since February to prepare for their participation in the 2007 4-H Fashion Revue. The culminating event – A-May-Zing Creations – found nearly 60 4-H members from Columbia, Greene, Albany and Rensselaer Counties on the runway at JoAnn etc., Colonie. 4-H members, from kindergarten through high school, were wearing the garments they sewed and had judged this spring.

Working up to this event, many participated in sewing workshops held this winter. They then participated in Judging Night, where they wore their garments and were evaluated on look, fit, and sewing ability.

Then they practiced their walk and pivots, for their turn on the runway. Some also mannequin modeled – posing as a mannequin – before the runway revue.

Participants from Columbia County were: Emily Ooms, Hanna Stark, Alexis Hoffmann, Meagan Chittenden, Emily MacIntosh, Ashlynn Keller, Danielle Keller, Ellen Bury and Bethany Meyers. Those who were judged but not available for the revue were Josh Cohn, Ben Cohn, Chloe Meltz, Virginia Schertel and Samantha Schertel.

Recipient of the Senior Fashion Revue Award was Ellen Bury. Recipient of the Junior Fashion Revue Award was Meagan Chittenden. The Outstanding Beginning Sewer was Samantha Schertel.

Those who are eligible to participate in the NYS Fair 4-H Fashion Revue (are teens and received a blue ribbon) are Ashlynn Keller, Ellen Bury, Chloe Meltz, Virginia Schertel and Samantha Schertel.

Visitors to the Columbia County Fair this summer will be treated to a Columbia County 4-H Fashion Revue on Sunday, September 2nd, at 12 Noon in the 4-H Building.

Thank you to the Hudson Rotary Club for the support it has given to the 4-H Clothing and Textiles Program, that not only includes the Fashion Revue but also Community Service Sewing Projects, a Career Exploration Trip to NYC and sewing workshops for 4-H members and leaders. The 4-H Clothing and Textiles Project is just one of the many project areas that youth can explore through 4-H.
