Current
Issues
The rain persists to fall across New York. Eastern
Wayne County recently received 5 inches of rain in less than 2
1/2 hours resulting in area flooding. Other counties in the state
have been declared disaster counties by FEMA due to flooding.
These counties include: Allegany, Cattaraugus, Deleware, Erie,
Hamilton, Herkimer, Ontario, Saratoga, Schoharie, Steuben,
Ulster, Washington, and Yates.
There is an excellent resource available at your
local Cornell Cooperative Extension office, The Disaster Handbook,
volume 1 and 2. In volume 2, in which two sections could be extremely
useful as we encounter heavy rainfall. Chapter 9 is entitled "Floods."
Section 9.4 offers a Flood Fact Sheet and Section 9.6 highlights
"Flood Safety Precautions." Also, Chapter 8 addresses
"Lightening and Thunderstorms."
