Who is it for?
Preschool age children,
their families and communities
Why was this program started?
The
Eat Well Play Hard Initiative was born out of a concern for the increasing prevalence
of overweight among children in New York State. A survey conducted among a representative
sample of second and fifth grade children revealed that 35% of children in downstate
New York and 28% of children in the rest of the state were overweight. Among
both preschool aged children and second and fifth graders, there are approximately
twice as many overweight children as might be expected in the population. Research
has shown that overweight children are twice as likely to become overweight
adults. Overweight has been found to be a significant risk factor for heart
disease. According to the WNY Health Risk Assessment Survey 53% of adults in
Erie County are overweight. Heart disease continues to be the leading cause
of death in Erie County.
