Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Free “Buying a Home” workshop especially helpful in current real estate and mortgage market

“We’re very excited to be offering “Buying a Home” right now,” said Cornell Cooperative Extension Educator Stefanie Hubert, “We have two wonderful collaborators who are going make a great program even more valuable to consumers.”Participants at a recent "Buying a Home" program

“Everyone has heard about the credit crunch, the economy, and uncertainty in the real estate market, but you can buy a home – a first home -- right now, and we’re going to show people how to accomplish that.” Hubert is enthusiastic about Extension partnering with M&T Bank and the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York, (FHLBNY) who bring important elements to participants.

“Our students will have the opportunity to learn directly from banking professionals, thanks to M&T. This interaction helps take the “mystery” out of the mortgage process,” said Hubert, “Then there is FHLBNY’s First Home Club, designed to encourage all qualified and enrolled households to save towards the purchase of their first home.  For each $1.00 systematically saved, the FHLBNY will match with $4.00, up to a maximum of $7,500.00 per enrolled household.  These funds can be combined with other personal assets to assist the homebuyer with down payment and closing costs for the purchase of a home.”

“Buying a Home” runs for four weeks at Cornell Cooperative Extension, 18 Seward Avenue, 3rd Floor, Community Campus, Middletown NY from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm beginning Wednesday, June 18, 2008.  The program is free of charge, but please register early to reserve your spot, as space is limited to the first 36 people. Light refreshments and materials will be provided.  For questions contact Stefanie Hubert or to register contact Christina at 344-1234.

Financial Management

The need for financial and credit education has become a critical economic and social problem for consumers in Orange County. Many consumers are increasing their use of credit and decreasing their savings to survive financially. Bankruptcies in the Mid-Hudson are running at a near record level despite a decline in joblessness. Employers are recognizing that financial wellness is totally related to important factors of productivity.
