Five Steuben County 4-H Members Compete
at Intercounty Horse Competition

Summers for kids in the 4-H horse program are spent competing on an individual basis at shows in the area, often against one another. Columbus Day weekend brought new challenges to five Steuben County 4-H members as they attended a team competition open to all NYS youth. Chemung County hosts the competition for teams of five consisting of 3 “seniors” (ages 14-18); 2 “juniors” (ages 9-13); and one “senior” stable manager. Our Steuben County team of seniors, Brittany Geffers and Rachael Ostrander; juniors, Jennie Van Skiver and Lexi Fairbrother, and senior, stable manager Erica Freeman finished the weekend in the top three overall of the 26 teams attending.

More importantly the kids had a chance to work together and bond, taking the focus away from the individual and placing in on the group as a whole. They had a blast!

The most unusual aspect of this competition is the requirement that parents leave the barns early Saturday morning and have no contact with the kids during the event. Also unique to this competition is the fact that the teams are encouraged to decorate their designated areas of the barn with a theme. This team called themselves the Outrageous Outlaws and their decorations included Wanted Posters of each with her horse and one of the “Sheriff” (Stable Manager)

The results indicate the variety of talent our Steuben County Team exhibited. With 52 juniors and 78 seniors competing, the competition was fierce and our highlights include:

2nd Place Sr. Overall Knowledge – Erica Freeman
2nd Place Jr. Overall Performance - Jennie VanSkiver
3rd Place Sr. Overall Performace – Brittany Geffers
4th Place Jr. Overall Knowledge – Lexi Fairbrother
6th Place Sr. Overall Stable Managers – Erica Freeman
9th Place Sr. Overall Knowledge – Rachael Ostrander
