Dairy Experience

Experience the fascinating world of DAIRY!!

Q: Will you be 14-16 years of age in the fall of 2008?
Q: Are you interested in dairy?
Q: Do you enjoy hands-on learning and teamwork?
Q: Do you want to travel outside the state?

If you (or someone you know) answered "yes" to these questions, then read on!
Program Description:
Dairy Experience is a one-year program for students 14-16 years old in the Capital District who are interested in discovering exciting opportunities in the dairy industry. Dairy Experience exposes youth to local leaders in the dairy industry who serve as an example of the exciting future the dairy industry can provide.

The program will consist of a series of hands-on workshops and educational trips that expose young people to many facets of the dairy industry. In general, these activities will take place during 7 or 8 weekends between September 2008 and July 2009. Some of the activities will include:
- Team- building weekend
- Dairy tour
- Cornell University "Dairy Discovery Day" and campus tour
- Hands-on dairy workshops
- Tours of agribusiness

Dairy Experience is designed for students who enjoy meeting new people, are eager to engage in teamwork and leadership roles, and thrive in an educational setting that involves hands-on activities and travel.
Upon completing the program, participants will be awarded a diploma at graduation and will leave with the experiences and knowledge they have gained about the dairy industry.  Additionally they will be well positioned to continue in the statewide “Junior Dairy Leader” program, sponsored by Cornell University, if they choose.

Mission:
Dairy Experience exists to educate and excite youth about the opportunities that the dairy industry can provide.

Objectives:
- Expose youth to people who are excited about the dairy industry and who lead by example.
- Foster enthusiasm and a positive attitude toward further educational opportunities in the dairy industry.
- Demonstrate the diversity of the dairy management techniques that exist in the Northeast through hands-on activities and tours.
- Develop communication and team-building skills.

Management Discussion Group

Responding to concerns from local dairy farmers that there are not enough opportunities for "next-generation or new" dairy owners to network and get experience discussing problems, Cornell Cooperative Extension is trying to assist in starting an informal discussion group. Using a mix of meetings, on-farm tours and guest speakers, we hope that this farmer-directed group will find value in spending some time interacting together.
Anyone interested in participating please contact Sandy Ferry at Cornell Cooperative Extension at 746-2560 or 1-800-548-0881 or e-mail at slf10@cornell.edu .
