4-H Teen Council Gives to Katrina and Hadlock Pond Relief

The Washington County 4-H Teen Council voted to assist with Hurricane Katrina and Hadlock Pond relief during their monthly meeting in October. The funds will be drawn from the Teen Council general fund, which receives its money from 4-H Food Booth activities during the course of the year.

Teen Council members debated over the amount that should be given to each program and how much the Council could afford to give. In the end, the Council decided to provide $500 to each effort. This effort is part of the community service goals of 4-H locally, statewide, and nationally. Every 4-H member is encouraged to give back to their club, their community, their country and their world.

The $500 for Katrina Relief will be sent to Louisiana State University Cooperative Extension and Mississippi State University Cooperative Extension. Both of those agencies had created priority lists of what they needed to help support their 4-Hers. Some of the materials they are purchasing will be used to replace 4-H materials lost in the floods, home education kits for displaced youth, and other necessities.
The funds for the Hadlock Pond relief were distributed via the Hadlock Pond Relief Fund. One Teen Council member's family lives in the area that was effected by the flood. While that family did not lose any possessions, they felt that it was important for that situation not to be forgotten among all the other things going on in the world.
