u>Ag Literacy 2008 is Huge Success!!

More than 1000 students across Wayne County learned about Maple Syrup production as part of Ag Literacy Day on April 8, 2008. Agriculture producers and friends of agriculture read the book Sugar Bush Spring by Marsha Wilson Chall and illustrated by Jim Daly to 2nd grade students across Wayne County. Wayne County Maple Princess, Caitlyn Pilc, read to classes in Williamson, where she is also a student.

"This was a great opportunity to showcase the diversity of agriculture in Wayne County," commented Beth Claypoole, Executive Director and Ag Issues Leader for Cornell Cooperative Extension Wayne County. Wayne County is the fifth largest agriculture producing county in New York State.

Volunteers read to each classroom and then presented the book to the teacher for the classroom library. Fifty three classrooms participated this year. "Last year we had 12 classrooms and it was so popular that word spread about this year's participation, " added Claypoole, the Wayne County coordinator for the program. Several readers were maple syrup producers and brought in supplies so that students could see how maple sap is collected and how maple syrup is produced. It takes forty gallons of maple sap to produce 1 gallon of maple styrup.

One teacher commented: " Ag Literacy went extremely well. Loved it and so did the kids. I think they really had a great lesson. Afterwards we served the syrup with pretzels and teddys for dipping. A great hit! " Some schools hosted a pancake breakfast and another school toured a local maple producer's farm.

New York State is the second largest maple producing state in the country. Sugar maples are the NYS Tree. Maple trees are only located in the Northeast Region of North America - this is the only place in the world where you can get fresh maple syrup!

Ag Literacy Day was coordinated in Wayne County through Cornell Cooperative Extension, Farm Bureau, and Grange. At the state level, Ag in the Classroom is the overall coordinator of the program, along with program sponsors: NYS Maple Producers Association, Farm Bureau Foundation and American Agriculturist Foundation.

Wayne County is diverse in its agricultural base. The countryside is plentiful in orchards, vegetables, dairy farms, grain operations and nurseries. Cornell Cooperative Extension provides education for these ag businesses.

Cornell Cooperative Extension Wayne County supports three regional agriculture teams and a local commercial horticulture program. By providing local county dollars into the regional agriculture program, Wayne County farmers and agriservice have access to more than 13 specialists in specific commodity areas. Check out the "Commercial Agriculture" page to get more information and enrollment form for the teams

According to the 2002 US Ag Census, there are 165,213 acres in farms, covering more than 42% of the county. More than 900 farms dot the countryside growing everything from hay to wine grapes to the main crop of apples.

Wayne County farms sell more than $103 million in agriculture products each year. The leading products are: fruit and berries, dairy products, poultry, and vegetables. Wayne County is the fifth largest ag producing county and the second largest crop producing county in the state.

Farm acreage has remined relatively stable, losing less than 10,000 acres since 1992 (<10%), including less than 2,000 acres since 1997.

Wayne County ranks number one in the state for apple production, and third across the nation. With more than 1.5 million trees, total value of all fruit grown in Wayne County was more than $40 million, an increase of more than $16 million from 1987 census data.

During 2006, 219 adults, representing 524 family members, participated in nutrition education opportunities within our county. We offer six to seven lessons in a series, delivered over time, allowing participants the opportunity to develop skills, increase knowledge and incorporate changes into their daily lives. Of the enrolled adults, 171 (78%) graduated their series of lessons. Additionally, 36 youth received education designed to increase their awareness of healthy eating and the benefits of being physically active. These efforts are the result of 4 community education staff or 3 FTE’s (full time equivalents).
