Smoke Stains

These procedures may be used for cigarette, cigar or pipe smoke. They may also be used if there has been a major fire and odors are clinging to clothing and household fabrics.

Some smoke odor may be partially released by airing the items. Light smoke damage to washable fabrics requires laundering and air-drying. Use ammonia and a heavy duty detergent. You may also use a household cleaner with grease cutting action such as Lestoil, Top Job or Mr. Clean. Be sure to re-wash with laundry detergent and rinse well.

Another way to get rid of smoke fumes in clothing is to take them to a dry cleaner. Request a special process to remove smoke. The cost of cleaning will be higher for the special cleaning process required. If the odor still persists, you may have to discard the items.

When smoke fumes have penetrated the rugs, carpets, draperies and mattresses, it may be necessary to hire a commercial cleaning company, which uses an ozone generator. Your house must be closed tightly for this cleaning. Check with your fire insurance agent before arranging for this process.

Before any stain removal process is started, you must remember that every stain removal method is not suitable for every fabric. Be sure to test each stain removal product in an inconspicuous spot such as a seam allowance.
