Cleaning Tea Kettles, Coffee Makers, Humidifiers, Irons

To remove lime deposits in metal kettles, fill with equal parts of vinegar and water. Bring to a boil and allow to stand overnight. Or you can fill the teakettle with water and refrigerate for about half a day. The lime is worked free by the cold and will come out when the kettle is emptied. For Corningware teapots, fill with water and drop in two denture-cleaning tablets. Let stand thirty minutes and rinse well. Another method is to pour one-quarter cup of vinegar or lemon juice in the pot and fill with hot water. Let stand a couple of hours and rinse.

A Thermos can be cleaned using 1 quart of water and 1 tablespoon dishwashing detergent. Let soak overnight; rinse well.

To clean a perk coffee pot, fill the pot as if making coffee and add baking soda. Place empty coffee basket in pot. Perk 5 minutes. Lightly go over the surface with steel wool cleaning pad. For COFFEE MAKERS - follow manufacturer's directions.

To clean a dehumidifier follow the manufacturer's directions of care and cleaning. Use distilled or demineralized water in your humidifier. Do not allow scum and scale to develop. Change water daily, emptying the tank before you fill it. Use a brush or other scrubber to clean the tank. If chlorine bleach or other cleaning product or disinfectant is used, make sure to rinse the tank well to avoid breathing harmful chemicals.

To remove a mineral build-up in a steam iron, fill the iron with tap water and rest the sole plate on a cake cooling rack. Turn the dial to steam and to the high setting. Shake periodically until all water is dissipated. You may have to repeat the process two or three times, if the condition is not cleared up after the first attempt. Another method to remove mineral deposits from the inside of a steam iron, is to fill it with equal parts of water and white vinegar. Let it steam for several minutes, then disconnect and let set for 1 hour. Empty and rinse out with clear water. Remove brown or burned on spots on the sole plate of the iron by cleaning with a heated solution of vinegar and salt. To clean the outside of your iron use toothpaste or silver polish.
