With a well earned historical place in America’s history of agriculture, the role of equine operations in the Orange and Ulster County counties has taken on a new look. While the equine population of over 14,000 head is diversified, and the deep rooted Standardbred industry driving on, the pleasure horse numbers have greatly increased, lending to the accelerated growth of boarding and training facilities to meet their demand. Breeding operations account for 10% of the equine farms within the borders of the two counties. Equine facilities offering either instruction for enthusiasts or animal training tally 26% of our equibusiness. Boarding barns are recorded at 29% of the services offered to horseman throughout the area. Pleasure and sport horses account for roughly 70% equine use, while non-commercial ownership of equine accounts for half the animals accounted for in Orange and Ulster Counties.
