RAPP Jr. Leaders

RAPP’s Junior Leaders honored by Orange County Youth Bureau

The Junior Leaders from Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Relatives as Parents Program (RAPP) were the proud First Place recipients of the 2008 Orange County Youth Bureau Award for Outstanding Leadership, Volunteerism and Citizenship.

As long-time members of RAPP 4-H Clubs, these seven young people have provided leadership, guidance and the planning of community service and special events for RAPP youth.  “Our Junior Leaders do a wonderful job of working with the adults in preparing and guiding the other youth in all sorts of projects and activities,” said Linda Coleman, RAPP Youth Coordinator. “This is an exceptional opportunity for them to develop leadership abilities and self-confidence. They also have a great deal of fun.”  She noted the Junior Leaders came up with the idea of a “magical” theme for the annual RAPP Family Picnic on July, 10. “We have a magician coming, and the Junior Leaders are having a great time participating in the planning of this event.”

The seven Jr. Leader’s are all members of RAPP families (they are being raised by grandparents or other relatives). Within the organization of a customized RAPP 4-H Club, they provide leadership for the younger members (also being raised by relatives) during monthly RAPP meetings for their caregivers

For the past 10 years, the Relatives as Parent’s program (RAPP) in Orange County has assisted grandparents and other relatives who serving in a parental role. Through generous funding, there is no charge for the program.
