4-H Leader Recognition
4-H Leaders Are Special People! They
are the backbone of the 4-H Program. A good leader
is a person of principle. A 4-H leader serves
as a model for youth. What he/she does and says
is closely watched and often imitated by the youth
in his/her care. A good leader sets a good example
by practicing and believing the 4-H Creed. A good
leader is kind and considerate to others. A good
leader is fair and consistent. A good leader is
honest and ethical. A good leader does what is
right even if it means personal sacrifice. A good
leader understands that the process of human growth
and development is always more important than
the success of a project or activity. Being a
4-H leader is a special job. Leaders are being
recognized for their volunteering and service
to the 4-H program. Special recognition is given
to leaders completing 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40 &
56 years.

“I Dare You” Leadership Award
William Danforth was a successful
businessman who dared young people to achieve
their highest potential to influence others through
lives of leadership and service. As a civic leader,
he helped found the American Youth Foundation
in 1925. The belief then as it is today is that
each individual can make a difference. He was
delighted to see talents developed and potential
fulfilled. His challenge to all was to “be
your own self and at your very best all of the
time”. The “I Dare You” Leadership
Award recognizes those who, with little encouragement,
are ready to see themselves as leaders. We hope
that the 4-H program instills this same challenge
to 4-H members. This award is presented to:
Emily Lyons – Dairy Dynamites
Outstanding 4-H’er Award
Each year, youth are recognized as

this by using wood, thread, needles, saddles,

magic in the lives of youth and you are very good
at what you do! The 4-H staff thanks you and salutes
you!

4-H Programs
Support Budding Entrepreneurs
The new movie, Charlotte’s
Web, features a young girl, Fern, who clearly
enjoys the farm animals around her. Animal management
is still enjoyed by many 4-H members today, but
often with an entrepreneurial and high-tech spin.
For Amy Quanz, of Wayland, raising, showing and
selling cows and pigs has helped her focus on
what she loves to do -- work with animals. But
along the way, she’s also learned valuable
skills including public speaking, money management,
marketing, dairy judging, cooking, sewing, organization,
independence, leadership and the value of hard
work – skills that will serve her well in
her future career.
As a Steuben County 4-H member, Quanz has taken
advantage of numerous opportunities offered through
the county 4-H program, including animal care,
livestock judging, science and technology events,
public presentations, and trips to national competitions.
“I’ve been given so many opportunities
through 4-H,” Quanz says. “I’ve
learned what traits are more important if you
want your hog to bring in more money. But I’ve
also developed my public speaking skills, learned
how to interact with people and how to act confident
and smile, even when you mess up in the show ring.”
Quanz is one of more than 170,000 youth throughout
New York State who will be assisted through the
NYS 4-H Foundation’s “Give Change,
Make Change for Youth” publicity and fundraising
campaign, which kicks off this month and culminates
next summer with a fund drive to support programs
and raise awareness of the many faces of 4-H today.
Nationally, 4-H began in the early 1900's to supplement
children's public education with “hands-on”
learning. Today, the 4-H program is one of the
largest youth development programs in the United
States, involving more than 6.5 million young
people, ages 5-19, and 540,000 youth and adult
volunteers. 4-H clubs today are focused on more
than farm topics since over half of the 4-H members
no longer live in rural areas.
Learning experiences in 4-H encourage youth to
experiment, innovate and think independently.
Youth learn leadership, citizenship and life skills
through more than 1,000 projects with topics as
varied as rocketry, GPS mapping, computer game
design, public speaking, photography, nutrition
and community service.
Through many of these ventures, youth also learn
valuable entrepreneurial skills. For some 4-H
teens, these skills are developed by inventing,
marketing and selling a food product or service.
For Quanz, participating in quiz bowls and skillathons
on animal topics improved her animal husbandry
skills. The experience of being judged has helped
her learn how buyers determine a quality animal.
The opportunity to manage a budget for her livestock
brought home the importance of being financially
savvy. Now a junior in high school, Quanz plans
to study either pathology or pharmacy in college,
and find a career related to animals in those
fields.
New York State’s 4-H program also connects
youth to the resources of Cornell University,
helping young people get excited about school,
learning and career options. For more information
or to make a contribution to 4-H, please contact
the NYS 4-H Foundation at: 607-255-0786.

Two
4-H Members Explore New York City
The recent 4-H Career Exploration
Trip to New York City offered a view of a different
culture for two Steuben 4-H members. The bright
lights, busy streets, and melting pot of diversity
were everywhere to be seen. The 4-H group visited
numerous sites of interest. They watched Broadway
shows and tasted the local cuisine at several
restaurants, including the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company.
CCE chaperone Jon Sterlace commented, “It
was great seeing the 4-H’ers learn about
possible career paths from all the people we met
and places we visited. I am sure for many this
was the trip of lifetime.”

4-H members an opportunity to have their presentations
evaluated on a district level. To succeed in life,
one must be able to communicate effectively. Provided
with opportunities to practice one’s speaking
skills we learn how to make ourselves heard as
well as defend our aspirations and beliefs. Throughout
its history, 4-H Programs have provided opportunities
for youth, particularly through its innovative
public presentation program. Helping youth develop
self-confidence, self-esteem and the lifelong
skill of public speaking; as well as providing
opportunities for youth to share their knowledge
and skills with others, stimulates further learning.
What better way to prepare youth for the future
and the work world.
