Parenting Skills Workshop Facilitator Training

The Facilitator Training is designed for parenting educators and others who work with parents/caregivers/children/families and who wish to gain experience with the Parenting Skills Workshop Series. The program model is easily replicable, inexpensive, and builds upon partnerships among agencies. The 2-day training will include:

  • An overview of empowerment as developed by the Family Matters Project of Cornell University
  • A short review of Arnold Goldstein’s structured learning method
  • Introduction of Enhanced Parenting Skills curriculum and discussion topics:
parenting styles and discipline, child development, cultural influences,
    environmental issues
  • Discussion and practice of the five Parenting Skills Workshop Series skills: Encouragement, Can Do, Choices, Self Control, Respecting Feelings
  • Active participation and role play within small groups
  • Introduction and overview of Parenting Skills for Literacy

New this year: Enhanced Parenting Skills, a curriculum addition that extends the Parenting Skills Workshop Series by focusing on parenting styles and discipline, child development, cultural influences and environmental issues (to be offered to parents in Fall 2008 in Tompkins County as the Parenting Styles Workshop Series).

The 2-day Facilitator Training will prepare professionals to reinforce use of the five communication skills with clients, and to conduct or make referrals to the Parenting Skills Workshop Series or the Parenting Styles Workshop Series. Past workshop participants include: parenting educators, DSS personnel, social workers, teachers, child care providers, mental health professionals, alcohol & drug rehab counselors, human service workers, counselors, coaches, people working with children/adults/families.
