2008 Farm Trail Open House Weekend
& Harvest Sampler Dinner

Farm Trail Open House
Saturday-Sunday, August 16-17
12 Noon - 5:00 pm

The second annual Farm Trail Open House has expanded to become a two-day event, to be held on Saturday, August 16th and Sunday, August 17th. Visitors can tour different farms from 12noon-5pm each day, and will meet a wide variety of local agricultural producers. Farm products will be available for sale at many of the participating farms. Click on Saturday or Sunday to access a map for the participating farms.

Saturday’s tour will include five farms on the Eastern shore of Cayuga Lake, including: Dilmun Hill, a student-run organic vegetable farm; Cornell Orchards in Lansing, which uses a variety of research and teaching methods to grow a wide selection of fruits sustainably; Finger Lakes Dexter Creamery, where heirloom Dexter cows produce the milk used to make Kefir cheese; Thomson Farm, a vegetable farm that functions primarily as a Community Supported Agriculture share provider; and One of a Kind Apple Orchards, which offers over 450 varieties of modern and antique apples.

On Sunday, the tour will introduce visitors to six farms on the West side of Cayuga Lake. These include: Motherplants, a “living roof” plant nursery; BWW & Remembrance Farm, a land partnership between a pasture- raised goat farm and an organic vegetable farm; Silver Queen Farm, which specializes in U-Pick fruit and vegetables; Fingerlakes Farmstead Cheese, a specialized cheese producer that uses only raw cow’s milk from the family owned dairy next door; Laughing Goat Fiber, an alpaca farm specializing in home-grown exotic fibers as well as original home-made fiber goods; and A.J Teeter Farm, the oldest continually operating family farm in the town of Ithaca, which raises hay and beef cattle.

Admission to participating farms is granted to those wearing an “I Love Local Farms” button, available for $2 per individual or $5 per carload (4 people) at the Ithaca Farmer’s Market and the Tompkins County Cooperative Extension until August 16th, and at the farms on the days of the tour. Buttons can be used for all the farms on both days.

Harvest Sampler Dinner

After Saturday’s Farm Trail, visitors and the public are invited to attend a Harvest Sampler Dinner from 6-9pm at the Ithaca Farmer’s Market. IFM is renowned both for fresh farm products and for great prepared foods from world cuisines, including Asian, Cuban, Indian, Greek, Mexican, and more. Wines and desserts from IFM vendors will complete the meal.

Harvest Sampler Dinner tickets are $10 per person for Farm Trail visitors ($5 each for children under 10) and may be purchased in advance with your Farm Trail Weekend tour buttons from Cooperative Extension. The dinner is also open to the public for $15 per person, with advance registration requested. Please send payment to CCE Tompkins County, 615 Willow Ave. Ithaca, NY 14850 Attn. Monika Roth.

The 2nd Annual Farm Trail Open House has been coordinated by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County in cooperation with the Ithaca/Tompkins County Convention & Visitor's Bureau, the Ithaca Farmers' Market, and area farmers. Funding is provided in part by the NYS Dept. of Agriculture & Markets, and the Tompkins County Tourism Program.
