We can't wait for the next exciting season at the Children's Garden held at the Suffolk County Farm & Education Center in Yaphank. Every year brings more and more fun!

This year classes are held on:

July 11, 18, 25
August 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29

Some of the popular projects in our garden are:

  • Meet the Good Guys an informative display of beneficial insects.
  • Individual Raised Beds where pairs of children can have their own plots as well as choices about what they would like to grow.

  • An Herb Garden where children can learn about plants for dye and culinary uses.

  • A Strawberry Patch where children can learn to plant and harvest strawberries.

  • A Butterfly Garden which contains lots of plants specifically meant to attract butterflies to our garden.
  • A Bird Garden where many shrubs that attract birds will be added, along with birdhouses and sculptures.

Of course, we'll have all our favorite activities from previous seasons: planting sunflowers and pumpkins, collecting bugs, making compost, a visit from the Worm Lady, making newspaper hats, hayrides, garden tours on the Farm, and so much more.

Due to the abundance of interest in the Children's Garden, we will be offering one eight-week gardening session this summer. The session meets on eight consecutive Wednesdays from 10:00 am to 11:30 am. At the end of the session, we have a celebratory feast, using whatever we can from the garden. We find that children ages 5 and up are best suited for this program.

It is our hope that this session will fit into your family schedule and you will be able to join us this summer. If you have any questions and would like more information about the Children's Garden, please contact Caroline T. Kiang or Mary Lou Menga at 631-727-7850.

We look foward to planting with you!
