Dairy

Dairy Cattle Project Materials Available:

Dairy Goat Project
An Animal Science Project offered to youth ages 8-19. The project is designed to teach youth about goat breeds, housing, feeding, and showing and fitting. A county-wide club is available for youth interested in goats.

Beef

Meat Animal Steer
Purchase a 400-500# calf in the fall (October, November, December) and grain feed it until fair in August. Steers may be sold at the Wyoming County Fair.

Breeding Project
Start with a cow or heifer and raise a calf each year. You may see the calf each fall or add to project.

Horses

Youth may be independent members or a member of one of the dozen horse clubs in the county. Activities may include horse bowl, Hippology, public presentations, horse judging, horse shows, clinics, and tours. Opportunities to compete on a local, regional, state, and national level.

4-H Horseless Project
Designed to teach basic information about horses to youth in the 8-10 year old range using a coloring book format. Topics include safety around horses, horse markings and colors, health, nutrition, anatomy and equipment. Horse ownership is not required.

Rabbits

May have rabbits for both pet and market projects. A county-wide club invites youth interested in caring for and learning about rabbits to participate. Meetings are held once a month.

Poultry

1. A project in brooding and rearing includes raising at least 6 birds to market age either for meat or laying.
2. A laying flock project should have at least 6 birds, and members should keep records so they realize the costs involved in egg production.
3. Standard breeders project requires at least 2 hens and 1 cock of a recognized breed with chicks being raised each year. Special shows and demonstrations are part of this project. Suitable for youth with limited facilities.
4. Incubation and Embryology - incubating of eggs in a still air incubator. Study of Embryology is fascinating for those who follow the detailed instructions. Individuals, clubs, or school classes may borrow one of the 4-H incubators to complete the project. Sources of fertile eggs are available locally.

Sheep and Swine

1. Feeding- purchase lambs and pigs in April and feed them for market weight of 80-120# for lambs and 240# for hogs. Finished animals are shown and may be marketed at the Wyoming County Fair in August.
2. Breeding- purchase bred or open ewes or sows, grades or purebreds and feed the lambs or pigs as in the market project.

Holstein-Steer Project

Purchase one or two Holstein bull calves during the months of May, June or July. Raise these for 12-13 months on a concentrate ration, (NO ROUGHAGE). At time of purchase, calves should weigh 100 pounds or more. A show and sale will be held during Wyoming County Fair. Materials are available from the 4-H office.

Pet Care Project

A pet can be any living creature that lives in or near your home and depends on you for care and feeding. The member is responsible for the cleanliness, feeding and good manners of their pet. Different pets suitable are cats, tropical fish, rabbits, birds, gerbils, hamsters and guinea pigs.

Dog Care and Obedience

1. Offered in the spring for 9 weeks on an area basis throughout the county. Trained leaders teach members how to train their dogs to sit, stay, stand, heel and to do the recall.
2. Raising a Guide Dog Puppy- A 4-H'er or an adult may raise a Guide Dog Puppy to approximately 12 months of age. The puppies are usually 8-10 weeks of age at the start of the project. The puppy raiser is expected to raise the puppy in their home and to give the puppy lots of love as well as house breaking the puppy and giving it basic obedience lessons. Meetings are held approximately every 3 weeks by qualified instructors to help the puppy raiser, to measure the puppies progress and to give necessary shots, etc.
3. Dog Agility Classes are offered to interested individuals in the spring and summer. Dogs are trained to go thru an obstacle course that may consist of tunnels, jumps, hoops, etc.

4-H Veterinary Science Project

This project teaches information applicable to all species of animals.

1. Unit I - The Normal Animal - the unit covers animal attitude and behavior, the skin, membranes & intestinal discharges, maintaining animal health, cleaning and disinfecting, cells, tissues, organs and systems of the animal body.
2. Unit II - Animal Disease - Bacteria, viruses, external and internal parasites, nutrition, poisons, stress and heredity as related to diseases.
3. Unit III - Animal Health and its Relationship to Our World - a self study course in one or more areas of animal health.

Food is a part of many get-togethers and 4-H Club meetings are no exception! Learning the basics of cooking and baking is the key to success when creating any recipe.

A packet of materials was designed to help out beginning 4-H cooks. This packet can be picked up at the Wyoming County 4-H office. It includes:

• Kitchen Tools and Pans
• Useful Facts About Baking

Your favorite recipes may be entered in the Wyoming County Fair and may be selected to compete at State Fair. All 4-H members are encouraged to attend the annual 4-H Food Contest which usually takes place in October. Contest winners receive prizes and may be invited to demonstrate their recipe at State Fair in Syracuse.

History and Folklore

• Heritage and Horizons
  This is a 4-H program of projects and/or activities based on the history, folklife and folklore of New York State. The emphasis is on personal development through growth in knowledge and understanding of one's own heritage and that of New York State.
• Family Folklore: A 4-H Folkpatterns Project
  This project is designed primarily for youth who want to learn more about themselves, their families, and their communities. It is an opportunity for youth to explore the various factors and influences that have affected and continue to affect the objects, traditions, and organizations that exist in their communities. It is an opportunity for them to explore the local history of their towns, their families, and their own lives.
• Foodways: A 4-H Folkpatterns Project
  This project offers a method for 4-H'ers 10 years and older to explore the history of their families, their neighborhoods and towns - their own lives. It is an opportunity to discover their heritage through activities surrounding family food traditions.
  Accompanying a leader guide is a set of 24 activity sheets for members including games and songs based on foods; Herb and Spice Folklore; Food Folk Art and Collecting food and recipe information. Activity sheets may be copied.
  

Clothing & Textiles

The Clothing Program in Wyoming County allows 4-H members the opportunity to learn how to operate a sewing machine or serger.

Youth learn basic and advanced sewing skills that last a lifetime. In addition to constructing garments, topics such as color, design, consumerism, fabric selection and care, and grooming are addressed.

4-H members are encouraged to participate in the annual Clothing Revue held in May. Senior 4-H members (13-19 years old) may be chosen to represent Wyoming County at the Western District Clothing Revue and at the State Fair in Syracuse. Other events such as the "Make It With Wool" Contest can also be entered.

Home and family are an important part of everyone's life. Creating a pleasant home atmosphere is one of the goals of the Home Environment program. In addition to learning about home interiors, 4-H members also have the opportunity to experiment with different methods used to create arts and crafts. As new techniques are learned, 4-H members advance in creative expression.

All 4-H members are invited to attend workshops throughout the year and are encouraged to exhibit at the Wyoming County Fair.

The spending of money and wise decision making go hand in hand. Teenagers soon realize the value of money as they begin to work.

The consumer education program area helps teens learn to manage money and how to "buy wise" in times when the dollar does not go as far as you would like it to go.

Public Presentations

Past Public Presentation Information and Forms (pdf)

4-H Public Presentations are held each February. 4-H Public Presentation program is a 4-H activity, not a 4-H project. The Public Presentation program is frequently referred to as "the most beneficial and rewarding experience of all 4-H experiences". Public Presentations give 4-H members an excellent opportunity to research a subject, organize ideas in logical order, develop visual aids and learn to speak effectively before groups. With each public presentation, there is an increase in self-confidence, poise, self-esteem, stage presence and knowledge. Public presentations can teach a 4-H'er lifetime skills that will be useful in his or her future social, educational and career pursuits.

It is important for 4-H'ers to begin doing Public Presentations at an early age and continue throughout their 4-H career. Public speaking skills develop over time, with experience and repetition.

There are many materials and videos available about doing public presentations (free to borrow) at the Wyoming County 4-H office.

Teen Leadership

4-H Club Junior Leaders
All 4-H members 13 years and over are eligible and encouraged to become junior leaders. 4-H needs teens who are willing to assume leadership roles in the 4-H Program and the community.

4-H Award Trips

The Wyoming County 4-H Leader's Association is pleased to once again sponsor the 4-H award trips. Please remember to participate in this year's 4-H Cookie Sale as proceeds from our annual 4-H Cookie Sale help to fund these trips and other awards. 4-H award trips provide a wonderful opportunity to visit interesting places, do exciting things, meet fascinating people, spread the word about Wyoming County 4-H and make great memories!!!

4-H year (ex. for 4-H year 2006-2007, the 4-H'er must be age 14 to 19 by January 1, 2007) are eligible for these GREAT TRIPS!!! 4-H members 13 years old are eligible for some trips also. Applications will only be accepted if submitted in the 4-Her's own handwriting!!

Completed applications should be sent or brought to the 4-H office. The due date for the application can be found in your 4-H Newsletter, but the deadline normally falls around the end of November. Note: Award trips are subject to change without notice. In the event of a cancelled trip, efforts will be made to provide another trip opportunity for participants.
